Some may ask, what is this website about, or who’s writing this, or what’s the intention of opening a website to expose sparks of ideas…
Others may find this as a relief to see that a hotelier can write, or that can think beyond numbers, and occupancy…
But the intention of this website is not to discuss any of these perspectives, but to find the time to delve into what life is.
And what do I mean by this? Well, firstly, acknowledge that hospitality, in general knowledge, was a mean to an end, in the scope of receiving a stranger, in a place, with the intention of protection. There could be more meanings, but that was the origin of hospitality.
In the old days
People used to travel to migrate in search of new opportunities, to escape war, or to visit relatives. It was meant to be a dangerous or at least, intense journey, that would embark the traveller into the unknown.
Less he did know, that at one point, he would have to find shelter, food, and survive through the night. Money, as we know, evolved from things to paper, and now to the intangible, but imagine those old days, when people had nothing but their bodies, and sometimes, a few belongings.
However, we never tried to understand why one stranger, considering the danger of travelling in the old days, would be subject to staying at another person’s place. Hence, what hospitality, or modern human, has forgotten.
We humans, as Socrates exposed, are political animals; science, has stated the importance of socialising, eating a healthy diet, exercising, of going into nature. But that’s not it.
There’s something beneath all of this complexity, all of these routines that “make our lives better”.
Evolution without foundation
Fast forward. Look around, and open your eyes. The world is moving fast, or at least that’s what the news says. You can hear all their propaganda, selling you the idea that you have to get this, get that; that you have to do this, and that you cannot do that.
We can start to find our ground (but you remember you have to do this for work, that you have to cook; the needs).
But the thing is, hospitality, reminds us that we are in this present moment: a miraculous happening that involves energy and matter… Nothing more.
What is hospitality, and what is Solem Rem?
Think deeply about the idea of humanism, of the “Sapiens” (Yoal Harari) statements, proved scientifically throughout the years: the violence we carry within ourselves, the guilt that religion has posed upon us, or the incapacities that society preaches everyday when news are published and distributed.
Everyone can be telling lies, but it is oneself, that can decide what to believe, what to be, and what to do.
Hence the importance of hospitality, a misconception that has ranged nowadays, to businesses that offer food and beverage, lodging, and events, among others. This is the idea that has been monetised in order to sell education, or in order to keep up with global standards.
In the eyes of an evolving hospitality-concept, it can be thought as “a lifestyle that takes into consideration the individual self, the collective society, and how this interaction derives from the understanding that they can’t exist without the other, as they are an entity that engages, in a present moment, to be nothing but the whole universe”.
Solem Rem is that understanding. Come along, and let’s create this path to life.
